You may not have noticed, but cats are rather popular on the internet these days. So popular, in fact, that cat lovers across the world have developed a special lexicon to describe all things cat on social media sites like Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook.
Only the truly “in” crowd of the online cat community know these terms, so welcome to an insider view of cat lover slang for social media!
A (semi) Exhaustive List of Cat Lover Slang for Social Media:
Airplane Ears – Visualize an airplane. Now visualize a cat that just found out you are going on vacation without them for two weeks. Do you see the ears flattened back or to the sides like an airplane? Airplane Ears are often accompanied by a look of suspicion, anger, or irritation.
Because Cats – Why do cats only sleep in your clean laundry? Why do you have boxes strewn about your home? Why does your cat insist on helping you make the bed? The answer to almost any question can be “because cats.”
Belleh – This term originated with the Austin Power’s Movie line “Get in ma belleh” spoken in a Scottish accent. Used to refer to an extra round or fluffy cat belly with just the right amount of pink skin showing through.
Bunny Feet or Bunny Paws – Sometimes a cat will sit in a way that allows full view of their hind legs and the bottom of their feet. This makes their hind paws look like the thumpers found on bunnies.
Cat Dad or Paw Paw – An awesome dude who owns a cat or three.
Cat Life – Similar to Thug Life, but furrier and with more naps. You are living the Cat Life if you are home on a weekend night in your pj’s with at least two cats on your lap.
Cat Loaf – When a cat lays down with all four paws tucked under they form the into the delicious shape of a cat loaf.
Cattitude – Cattitude describes a look or mood of a cat that wants nothing to with your foolishness, unworthy human. They can look aloof, judgy, disapproving or slightly murderous. Here Hank and Gary demonstrate their disdain for humanity:
Cats Helping – Cats are notoriously bad at helping. You try and work on a puzzle, they sit on the pieces. You try and make the bed, and they decide they need to nap in the middle of your bottom sheet. If your cat is helping, chances are whatever you are doing will not get done.
Caturday – Saturday with a C because the only thing that makes a Saturday better is cats!
Chocolate Star Fish – The chocolate star fish is something you see as your cat walks away from you haughtily, with their tale held high. It can also be used interchangeably with Poop Stamp (see below for definition).
COI – Short for “Cats of Instagram.”
Crazy Cat Lady – A term that used to be used to put single women with cats down that is now used with pride to describe animal lovers, rescuers, and guardians of any gender who care for one or multiple cats.
Derp, Blep, Herp or Merp – These terms are used when a fine feline specimen lets their tongue stick out or does something awkward and embarrassing. Der and Spaghetti ‘O are seasoned derpers.
Derp Off – You have to be deep into the online cat community to know about a derp off. This is when cat lovers pit their derpiest cat pictures against one in another in a contest where everyone wins. On Instagram, Caturday is the derp off day of choice. You can post an early bird derp off picture in the morning or join in at night for the Caturday Night Derp Off.
Dingleberry – A small, usually somewhat dry, incredibly tenacious bit of feline feces stuck to the furry bum of a cat.
Ermergerd – This term is translated from “Oh My Gawd” to mean: If this cat gets any cuter, my head will explode.
Flat Cats – Flat cats allow cat lovers to travel with a copy of their cat so that that appropriate pictures can be taken without the cost or stress of traveling with a furry friend.
Flat Face Problems – Persian, Exotic Shorthair, and some Scottish fold cats run into problems because of their smoosh faces. This can range from getting food on your forehead when you eat to being so darn irresistibly cute the humans constantly want to snuggle you.
Floof – When a cat is so fluffy that word fluffy no longer is enough to describe them, the word floof is used instead. Toe floof and ear floof are coveted by people who love cats.
Fluff You (You Fluffing Fluff) – How you tell someone in the cat world to eff off.
FUPA – This refers to the soft, floppy underbelly cats often sport after being fixed. It hangs down and flaps from side to side when they run. DO NOT GOOGLE FUPA it has an unfortunate meaning when referring to humans.
Fur Baby or Fur Kid – Cat people with or without kids refer to their cats as their fur baby or fur kid. They are not just pets they are family!
Furiend or Fur Friend – Human and cat friends that are part of the online community are not called friends, they are furiends or fur friends.
Fur Slug – This term is used to describe a feline that appears to have melted into whatever they are laying on. They appear completely boneless, and, well, slug-like!
Halp – Halp is an exaggerated version of help used when a cat looks particularly pitiful.
How to Cat – Cats often surprise humans by doing the unexpected or breaking the rules. They sit on toilets, crouch on top of fridges, boldly sit on tables and counters against their human’s wishes. Some even find the oven top to be a warm and cozy spot for a nap:
I Can’t, GAH, STAAAHP, and DED – These are appropriate exclamations to use when a cat is so ridiculously cute or funny that you simply cannot go on with life and are “DED.”
Kickstand AKA Escape Foot – A kickstand happens when a cat is sitting or lying down and one hind leg sticks out like a kickstand on a bicycle. Kyle from @mycatkyle was epic at kickstands. I hope he is still kickstanding on the other side of the rainbow bridge.
Mamarazzi – A humom that plagues her cats by constantly taking pictures and annoying the crap out of them.
Muffin Making or Making Biscuits – Cats knead blankets, pillows, and humans when they are happy or content. This action may be accompanied by the cat suckling on a blanket or ear, like a kitten suckles on a mama cat. If the cat kneads the air, they are making “air biscuits.”
Neckface – When you are too “fluffy” so you have no chin to delineate where your neck stops and your face begins.
NOPE– If you live with a cat, you have experienced NOPE. NOPE happens when a cat simply refuses – refuses to wear that costume, refuses to try that new food, refuses to take that pill or sit still for a picture. That’s all going to be a huge NOPE. Tortie cats are particularly well known for their NOPE expressions. Squish, the human’s first kitty, was the Queen of Nope so her human started the hashtag #catsofNOPE. Squish passed the crown to Lucille (@lucillethekitty) when she crossed the rainbow bridge.
Paw it Forward – Instead of paying a good deed forward, cat enthusiasts will “paw” if forward.
Poop Stamp – A poop stamp is what happens when a cat’s bum hole has direct contact with a surface area, usually your clean pillow or a freshly pressed shirt. Duffy is an expert poop stamper and has even managed to poop stamp his human’s arm.
Purrfect – If you are a cat, you and whatever you do is so perfect, a purr is required.
Purrito – A cat wrapped up in a towel or blanket so that they resemble a burrito. This swaddling technique is often used to cut nails, wipe faces, and brush teeth. An angry cat in this situation is a “spicy purrito.”
Purrvana – Purrvana is reached when a human scratches or rubs the right spot, like the chin or above the nose and between the eyes. A rolling back of the eyes in ecstasy is not uncommon.
Schmexy – Cats are by nature provocative and alluring creatures. They don’t care if they are drooling, or looking like a fool – they’ll still look you dead in the eyes and convince you they are 100% schmexy.
Snorgle – To bury your face in a cat and inhale. Also known as cat huffing.
Snuggle with a Struggle – This term describes what many cat aficionados experience when trying to initiate snuggle time with their favorite feline. Cats can act aloof and pretend they don’t want affection. It is a ploy, grab that cat and hold it close to your body. While they may try to escape, I assure you they secretly like it.
Sploot – \splüt \ Transitive verb. 1: To look incredibly adorable while laying on your belly with your feet and legs stretched out behind you. (Def.1. SquishDelishCats.com, Squish Delish Dictionary of Slang, Jan 2018)
Squee(eeee) or Eeeeee – Used when something is too cute for actual words. Like Mick as a kitten:
Supermeowdel – Maybe they are made with it, maybe it’s Meowbelline. Either way, a cat that can strike a pose earns this title.
Taco Cat – Did you know taco cat spelled backwards is taco cat? That makes it the greatest palindrome to ever exist!
TGIC – Short for “Thank Goodness It’s Caturday!”
Toe Beans or Jelly Bean Toes – Is there anything cuter than cat feet??? Every seasoned cat lover knows that getting a peek at the white, black or pink paw pads is squeee inducing. Those toe beans are so darn cute, one could eat them like jelly beans!
Tortitude – Tortitude describes the unique personality traits often found in a cat with tortoiseshell coloring. They are almost always female and tend to be confident, strong-willed, independent, sassy, bossy, and sometimes even a bit feisty. Most also suffer from RBF (Resting Bitch Face). One of my favorite dilute torties is Mavis:
Water Beard – Some cats enjoy dipping their entire faces into a refreshing bowl of cool water while drinking. What results is a dripping chin called a water beard. Wheezy (shown below) not only has a fantastic water beard, she expresses cattitude like a pro!
Hashtags for Days of the Week
Savvy social media users also know that different days of the week have specific hashtags associated with them:
Mondays: #CatsHateMondays – Usually accompanied by a picture of a very grumpy cat.
Tuesdays: #TacoTongueTuesday, #TongueOutTuesday, and #TOT. Oliver Taco started Taco Tongue Tuesdays on Instagram. Here is the legend himself demonstrating the correct technique:
Wednesdays: #WhiskersWednesday – Cats show off their whiskers on this day of the week!
Thursdays: #ThrowbackThursday or #TBT – People post old photos of their cat or pictures of their cats who have crossed the rainbow bridge.
Fridays: #FridayNightBoxPawty, #PawitForwardFriday, #FurFriendFriday, or #Fluffy Butt Friday – People post pics of their cats pawtying like rock stars in boxes, share posts that give animal rescues or cats in need exposure, feature a favorite fur friend, or post photos of their cat’s fluffy bottoms.
Saturdays: #Caturday #CaturdayNightDerpOff (also #CaturdayNiteDerpfOff), #EarlyBirdDerpOff – Caturdays are for celebrating weekends and cats. Derps abound on Caturday, as it is the designated day on Instagram to participate in Derp Offs.
Sundays: #SnazzySazzySunday and #SundayFunday – Cat’s dressed to the nines use the first hashtag, while those just hanging out having fun use the second.
Commonly Used Terms for Duffy and Fergie:
- Murder Bow Monday – Fergie is often annoyed with the mamarrazi, despite the promise of Ciao treats. In some pictures she looks as if she could murder someone, thus the hashtag #murderbowmonday.
- Chin sparkle or Chin Bling – It is no secret that Duffy is a drooler. The delicate slobber that decorates his chin is referred to as chin sparkle or chin bling.
- Pimp Paw Death Claw – This refers to the paw of a cat that doesn’t hold back on whacking you if you annoy them. Squish was the original wielder of the Pimp Paw Death Claw, and would sometimes whack Duffy just to keep him on his toes!
- Slob Kebob – I use this term when Duffy is looking particularly derpy and has an excess of slobber or food on his chin.
- Big Boss Kitty Sauce – I created the hashtag #bigbosskittysauce for my first kitty Squish, who ruled our home with an iron paw. Fergie now rules the roost, or at least Duffy lets her pretend she does.
- Hot Mess Express – Duffy often looks confused, surprised, and discombobulated. Combine that look with a crooked tongue and some drool and you get the Hot Mess Express!
